What to do with an Art Degree I wanted to give some insight for the art majors out there wondering what they are going to do once they graduate. Information for those who do not believe that artists can make it in the working world will be here. 1. Be Creative. You are an artist, you need to think outside of the box. What kind of art do you make? Do you like working with people? Do you like just to paint in a private studio by yourself? Whatever it is, begin writing a list on how you can make your strengths as a person/artist into a working, money paying job. 2. Build a website. I believe this is one of the most important aspects of being an artist in this century. Creating an online portfolio makes your work available all the time for any potential art director/publisher/etc. to view. Do not wait until you can have the website of your dreams, build a simple one, NOW. Rome was not built in a day, beautiful websites take time. Google has a free website creator and facebook pages always are a great way to promote your art. 3. Greeting Cards. Your artwork may look great on greeting cards or simply blank cards. Get some high quality digital images of your artwork, through digital camera or a scanner. Greeting Card Universe or Zazzle.com are great places to start for those who would like to open up their own greeting card business. They are both free, and the sites send out the cards when your customers order them. or Find a local printer, or buy your own quality printer to print your own greeting cards. Go to craft shows, put them on your website, call local stores, or attend big shows like the National Stationary Show in New York City to have them recognized. Hallmark.com also offers contests for card makers on their facebook page. 4. Show in Art Galleries. Look around your area for places that display art. Craigslist listings constantly have businesses that want paintings displayed on their walls. 5. Become an Art Therapist. This is a growing field that is rewarding and stimulating for many. If you enjoy working with people and do not want to become a teacher, becoming an art therapist may be right for you. You can work with many different populations including children, adolescents, adults and elderly. The possibilities are endless. 6. Become a Tattoo Artist. 7. Become a Make-up Artist. 8. Open up your own art studio. 9. Website Designer. 10. Graphic Designer. (More information coming soon.)
